A life experience that taught me an important lesson was when I got a proficient certificate for math. At the time I was doing poorly in math and I wanted to change that so I started to payed more attention in class when the teacher was teaching the class math.
It began when my mother at received my progress report in the mail. I was nervous it felt like I had butterflies in my stomach because I knew she wanted me to do well in school so I would work in the fields like her. She saw it and was disappointed that I wasn’t doing too well in math and had ask me why I didn’t do good in math being as shaky as a Chihuahua I said that it didn’t interest me she told me to focus on math and said “she knows it’s boring but I still have to know it in case it interested me in the future. My heart felt heavy like I was carrying an extra five pounds with cause I felt like I let my mother down.
Suddenly I made it a goal to do better in math so I followed along as best I could when the teacher was showing the class math problems I copied everything the teacher was writing down. But when I had math homework I was unable to complete because I wasn’t able to understand the problems. My mom saw me struggle and encouraged me not to give up and showed me how to do some of the problems, I was happy because I finally understood some of the problems and started to do a good Majority of them.
At last I was able to understand math, I did well on practice quizzes. When the time came for the California State test or as I called at the time the Star test I was determined to do well. There were problems in the Star test that I was even taught at the time which made me worry but after I was done I was sad because I thought I did terrible. After the summer and school started back up the teacher held an awards assembly for people who did well on the test and my name was called up for doing well in math and I was so happy that I was smiling the whole way up to get my certificate.
This event is significant for me because it showed me to not give up. I learned to not give up when things seem so difficult. This has affected my life now by not giving up on my class even if I do fail I won’t stop till I pass them.
